How integrative therapies, from acupuncture and rehabilitation to Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), can work together to support your dog's or cat's recovery, alongside your vet's care, not instead of it.
A stroke-like event can be an embolism, an ischemic stroke, or another sudden cause of weakness. Whatever the cause, the first priority is always a full Western diagnostic workup and appropriate emergency and rehabilitative care. Recovery doesn't stop there. Integrative medicine is a set of complementary therapies that can be layered on top of conventional treatment during the weeks and months of recovery that follow. The goal is to support nerve healing, shorten recovery time, and improve how much function returns:
These modalities aren't only useful for stroke and embolism recovery. Most dogs and cats who have a stroke-like event are older, and older pets very often have osteoarthritis or other musculoskeletal pain already. Physical rehabilitation, hydrotherapy, laser therapy, and acupuncture are also common tools for managing that kind of pain, so for many patients they're doing double duty: supporting the recent neurologic recovery while also treating a joint or muscle condition that was probably already there.
Conventional veterinary care and integrative therapies aren't competing approaches. They're partners with different strengths:

Structured, guided movement is usually the biggest lever a pet parent can pull during recovery, and it's typically the foundation an integrative plan gets layered onto.
Physical rehabilitation, sometimes called physiotherapy, uses guided exercise to help a dog or cat regain strength, balance, and coordination after a neurologic injury like a stroke. Much of the science behind it comes from human medicine and laboratory studies, not large trials in pets. Veterinary rehabilitation specialists increasingly borrow the same approach: combining several therapies together, started early, rather than relying on just one.
Rehabilitation has traditionally been offered to dogs more often than cats, but cats can benefit just as much, and that's changing. A cat's temperament and comfort with handling still shape which therapies actually work for that individual. A typical plan includes supportive care like a sling-assisted walking harness for a dog and padding to prevent pressure sores in a pet who can't reposition themselves, plus a slow, controlled return to activity as strength comes back. Ask your vet for a referral to a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner or Therapist (CCRP or CCRT); despite the name, these practitioners commonly treat feline patients too.
Hydrotherapy uses water, usually in an underwater treadmill, to help a dog exercise with less strain on painful or weak legs. Water's buoyancy supports some of your dog's weight, warmth can help sore muscles relax, and it can also change how a dog's joints move during exercise. It may help some dogs regain the ability to walk on their own faster after certain injuries, though the research so far is mostly in dogs recovering from disc surgery rather than stroke. Treat it as a reason to ask your vet about hydrotherapy, not a promise of how your own dog will respond. Ask first if your dog has a heart or blood pressure condition, since that can affect whether hydrotherapy is appropriate.
This is far less commonly used in cats, since most cats strongly dislike water and being submerged, which can add stress rather than help. It isn't impossible for an unusually water-tolerant cat, but ask your vet whether it's a reasonable option before assuming it applies the same way it does for dogs.
Laser therapy aims specific wavelengths of light at injured tissue. The idea is that this light may help injured cells heal, but direct research on how well it works in dogs with nerve injuries is still limited, including exactly how much of that light reaches deeper tissue through skin and fur. That doesn't mean laser therapy doesn't help. It means the science of how to dose it correctly is still being worked out.
Session length depends on how much area needs treatment. Most dogs and cats tolerate it well since there's no heat or pressure involved. The person operating the laser wears protective eyewear, and direct exposure to the beam is avoided for your pet and anyone else in the room, since it's more intense than everyday light and can damage the retina. It's commonly used alongside physical rehabilitation rather than on its own. Ask your vet or rehabilitation specialist whether it's worth adding for your dog or cat.
Veterinary acupuncture involves placing thin, sterile needles at specific points on a dog's or cat's body. Electroacupuncture adds a mild electric current between pairs of needles, and of the two, it has the most research behind it in dogs, particularly for helping dogs recover faster from spinal disc injuries. That research is in dogs with disc disease, not cats or stroke patients, so treat it as a reason to ask your vet about it, not a guarantee for your own pet.

It's grounded in neuroanatomy rather than TCVM's meridian theory, and some integrative vets train in it instead of, or alongside, TCVM.
Look for a veterinarian trained through Medical Acupuncture for Veterinarians (MAV), a certification program built around neuroanatomy and pain science rather than TCVM theory.
Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine explains the same needling technique differently, through the flow of Qi and Blood along meridians. A TCVM-trained acupuncturist selects points based on a dog's or cat's individual pattern rather than nerve pathways alone. Look for a veterinarian certified as a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA) through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) or Chi University (formerly the Chi Institute) of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine.
Both traditions use the same needles, and often the same points on your pet's body. What differs is how the practitioner was trained to choose them. If a TCVM-trained acupuncturist isn't available near you, a medical-acupuncture-trained vet is a reasonable alternative, and vice versa. Ask your vet for a referral to whichever is available locally rather than assuming you need one specific type.
TCVM is the veterinary application of Traditional Chinese Medicine, adapted for dogs, cats, and other companion animals. It's one framework integrative vets use, built around its own diagnostic tradition rather than Western anatomy and physiology. We cover it here because it's the framework this Foundation's own integrative veterinary medicine team works within. Research on TCVM in small animals, including acupuncture and herbal medicine, is strongest for spinal cord conditions like disc disease and for pain. It keeps growing. TCVM draws on four main modalities, usually used together rather than alone: acupuncture (covered in the section above), herbal medicine, food therapy, and tui-na.
Plant-based formulas chosen to support circulation, tissue repair, and organ function. Documented clinical uses include disc disease, pain, and several chronic illnesses, though the evidence base is still developing compared with Western pharmaceutical research. Herbal and nutraceutical support isn't unique to TCVM either: some integrative vets recommend evidence-based supplements outside a TCVM framework, so ask what's available to you either way. Because herbs are pharmacologically active, always tell your regular vet about anything a TCVM practitioner prescribes, so they can check for interactions with other medications.
Look for a Certified Veterinary Chinese Herbalist (CVCH), certified through Chi University.
Dietary changes chosen to support a dog's or cat's individual recovery, based on how their body is responding rather than a single generic diet. In TCVM, foods are categorized much like herbs: by warming or cooling energetic properties and by which organ system they're believed to support. A practitioner matches those properties to your pet's specific pattern, identified through the same pattern differentiation used to choose acupuncture points and herbal formulas.
This isn't necessarily a replacement for a prescription diet your regular vet has already recommended for another condition. Ask how the two fit together. Look for a Certified Veterinary Food Therapist (CVFT), certified through Chi University.
Tui-na (pronounced “twee-nah”) is a form of therapeutic massage and bodywork, rooted in the same meridian theory as acupuncture. Caregivers can often learn to do it at home between professional visits. There isn't research specifically on tui-na in dogs, and the closest available evidence on massage more broadly in animals is still too limited to prove how well these techniques work. A calming effect, like a lower heart rate, is the most consistent finding so far.
Ask your TCVM practitioner or rehab specialist to show you tui-na techniques you can safely do at home.
These ideas come from a centuries-old diagnostic system, not from Western lab tests or imaging. A TCVM-trained vet uses them alongside your dog's or cat's Western diagnosis, not instead of it. You may hear these exact terms at an appointment, so here's what they mean. If your practitioner trained in medical acupuncture instead, they'll describe what they're doing in neuroanatomical terms rather than these, and that's expected. Rather than diagnosing by disease name alone, a TCVM practitioner also looks at how your individual pet's body is responding to the injury. That includes things like pulse quality, tongue color, posture, and temperature preference. Matching that picture to a recognized pattern is called pattern differentiation. Two patients with the same Western diagnosis, like a spinal cord injury, can be assigned different TCVM patterns and different treatment plans, depending on how each animal's body is expressing the problem.
Conditions that cause sudden weakness, paralysis, or loss of coordination, including sudden spinal cord injuries, degenerative myelopathy, and disc disease, fall under an older TCVM category called Wei syndrome. Its signs are limb weakness or limpness, muscle wasting, and trouble standing or walking. In this framework, a sudden spinal cord injury blocks the smooth flow of Qi and Blood at the site, cutting off the nourishment nerve tissue needs to heal. Because the spinal cord is closely tied to the Kidney system, an underlying Kidney Qi deficiency often shows up alongside that blockage. This is especially common when weakness affects the back legs or all four legs.
As recovery goes on, a dog's pattern can shift, or reveal other imbalances underneath it:
General muscle weakness, poor appetite, muscle loss.
Low back and hind-leg weakness, cold-feeling legs or paws, changes in urination.
Weakness along with signs of dryness or depletion.
Weakness along with a dry coat, brittle nails, and anxiety.
Identifying which pattern, or combination of patterns, fits your dog or cat lets a TCVM practitioner choose acupuncture points, herbal formulas, and food therapy suited to that individual patient. That's different from applying one generic protocol to every stroke patient.
For a dog or cat recovering from a stroke-like event, an integrative plan typically layers therapies like these on top of the physical rehabilitation plan already underway. That usually means supportive care like a sling-assisted walking harness for a dog, padding to prevent pressure sores, and a slow, controlled return to activity. A course of acupuncture is often added too. If your practitioner works within TCVM and it fits the pet's pattern, herbal or food therapy support may be part of the plan as well. How often your pet is seen is adjusted over time based on how they're responding, tapering down as function returns.
The goal is never to replace the diagnostic and medical rigor of Western veterinary neurology. It's to add a second, complementary layer of support during the recovery window, when the nervous system's ability to heal is shaped by circulation, inflammation, and the body's overall balance.
